Lol well, terragen is free to use unless you make a finished game, then you gotta pay em. I dont have the link, if someone wants to give it... but you cant (or I dont think) you can make the skin for it in terragen.

stephen schmitt´s World machine for the heightmap,
http://www.world-machine.com/
either IceX editor for large non-shder terrains
http://www.icebytes.de/PrgIceXEN.php
or the multitexture terrain shader from the WIKI.

I like the terrain editor from Carrara. version 3 or even better 4.

There's also Vue from e-on software.

and Doc Mojo.

If you really just want to paint greyscale elevation maps, and you don't need to interactively view it in 3D, try a good paint program. In fact Project Dogwaffle has a few nice plasma noise generators with displacements that can be cvery useful for making whole planets, add paper texture and you'll thin you'll see sand dunes in there too, along with dry river beds.... There are a few tutorials in www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/tuts/o2 to give you an idea.

In fact there's a contest going on right now, for the discovery of planet X. I'm http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/contest/index.html#planet10

There's also something to be said about just drawing it out in photoshop.

I like this technique because it's really easy to just grab an airbrush and make pathways and beaches and stuff.. I think it's really the best way to do it, personally. I add another level with the texture in it right above the heightmap so I can match up heightmap pathways with the textures etc.

Then I just bring it into MED (and I always write down the scale/triangle size/etc) so when I want to edit it, I can re-create the HMP in the exact same scale.

Best wishes and happy almost new year,

Re: High Quality Terrain.. - 09/02/06 06:47

in case you missed it, Bryce 5 is offered free through Sept. 6 at http://www.daz3d.com

I have some tutorials here:

http://www.thebest3d.com/pdp/tutorials

Some are with Bryce 5.

Bryce 5 has a pretty impressive export module to send the terrain to other applications in various formats, with or without colors, textures, bump etc...

And the terrain editor is very powerful and intuitive too.
