File Formats -> PNG pros/cons

File Formats -> PNG pros/cons - 03/06/08 05:37

The manual has some great information on file formats, preceded by these two lines:

Quote:

Supported image formats are PCX, BMP, TGA, DDS, PNG, JPG, and WAD. All formats have their specific advantages and disadvantages.

However, the advantage/disadvantage of PNG is not described in the following paragraphs. Will I have less video memory consumption if I use PNGs instead of JPGs?

PNG has the same quality and video memory consumption as TGA. But unlike TGA it's supported for bitmaps only, not for level textures.

I did not test, but can acknex handle indexed png, without using the same palette for all
pngs. (transorming the png indexed input to true color bitmaps when loading)
This would substancially decrease the diskspace, when using png for big bitmaps, that dont require many colors.

why not? i don't think conitec uses a proprietary png file filter.

I don't know if indexed PNG is supported, but indexed images in a game in 2008 would be hardly appreciated. For saving space, use DDS.

I see but still i dont know the pratical pros and cons when working with them in 3dgs..
why should i use them? or is it a waste of memory using TGA when I can use DDS?
things like that..

You should use .dds textures because
* they are loaded very fast compared to other formats
* they consume much less video memory than uncompressed textures
* you can tell the amount of video memory the texture will eat up by the file size.

hmm sounds great.
I have photoshop 7 iŽll search for a plugin to work with .dds

Another question does .DDS has any imcompatibiity with older systems? or as long as the DirectX is updated on those systems, it works fine?

thanks

Look under Content Authoring - Photoshop Plugins at this Nvidia site. The plugins can also be used in PaintShop Pro.
