First Project - Looking for Constructive Crits!

First Project - Looking for Constructive Crits! - 08/11/07 03:29

Ok, so at this point, there is not a whole lot to look at in my project. However, I would really like to get some suggestions regarding what I have done so far, so that I can know that I am on the right track... A quick foreword, the level of quality that I would LIKE to achieve in this demo could be compared to that of Half Life (the origional). My goals are modest, but I have NEVER done game design before, and I think its really exciting to think I am in control of my own gaming expierence... too bad I already know how it ends .

Anyways, this will most likely be a rolling topic, as I will often ask for criticisim regarding different aspects of my project.

My first shot here is mainly regarding my textures, and their style. This is the first time I have designed game textures (though I have used Photoshop before for different purposes). Anyways, here is a picture of what I have created (level design is in basic BSP)...

Please, any suggestions regarding what could be improved are more than welcome. Perhaps, if you know how to make the change you are suggesting, you could give a few suggestions on how exactly to make the change. Again, thank you, and expect to see more as I move foreward.

Regards,

Looks ok, i think the Cover Texture is a little bit scaled to much...

Like you said, there is not much to critique, but your wall texture doesn't tile well, you can see it's seams, besides that, looking good.

That's a strange wall texture, it doesn't look like it's made of bricks (at least nobody would put the bricks straight upwards on each other, the wall would just fall apart).

Is it just made with that one filter from photoshop?
All three look like their are of a certain color with a photoshop filter to add shadow/ light.

It looks quite nice, but not realistic or with a certain style concept.

I know it needs a lot of experience to become a good 2D artist, maybe take a look at other none-photo textures from resources to get ideas on how it can be made or look for tutorials.

For a first try it isn't bad, making your first texture isn't easy as well, it takes time to find your own style A first project is indeed quite exciting like you've mentioned, good luck
I would suggest using shadows, dynamic lights to give it a more plausible look.

Thank you everyone for the comments.

@rvL_eXile: Now that I look at it, I agree. I scaled back the texture, thank you!

@Trooper119: Yea, I noticed that the wall texture isnt prefectly tileable... but after a while using Photoshops tile tool, I still couldnt get it to look any better than it does now. Maybe I will come back to it after I am further through the project, but thank you!

@ShoreVietam: Yes, these textures are fairly simple to create, mostly made use of photoshop filters with alpha maps and lighting effects. For this project, I am not worried so much about a realistic feel, rather I am just trying to make it look half-decent, which is hard enough! Thank you though, I will constantly updating and hopefully improving these textures.

@frazzle: I actually just got to lighting today, as I have finished the entire hull of my first level! Between the lighting and a few extras I have added, it is already starting to look very nice (at least I think so...) I will update some pics soon (most likely tonight) and would love some more feedback.

Thank you everyone for the comments, it really means a lot. Unlike some, I will really try to encorporate the suggestions I recieve into my project, as most of you know more about this topic than I do!

Thank you again!

Edit: Ok, so here are those pictures that I promised! Again, still not a HUGE change, but I have added lighting and a few models (crates, doors, lights). Again, any constructive critics are welcome and appreciated! Thank you.

NOTE: The door texture is temporary, but I wanted to have something, just so that I didnt put in a blank model.

Even though they dont look terribly real, I really like the crate textures (again, very simple design).

in the second picture i suggest scaling down the floor texture. Otherwise good effort and keep it up

color doesn´t fit. Brown walls reflect brown light. Well, maybe not today.

But the scaling is really not good.

as already mentioned, scale down the floor texture, and make it less contrast

The shadows you've added are oke, did you use z-buffer shadows or stencil buffer shadows. I ask this because they can make a difference within the fps. The level design needs some rework like scalling down the tiled floor texture which will make it look more realistic but you're on the right track
Waiting for updates ...

Re: First Project - Looking for Constructive Crits - 08/13/07 21:38

Thank you all again for the suggestions!

@bstudio: After comparing two different scales (the scale seen in the picture, and half that scale), I like the smaller of the two a little better. Thank you for the suggestion!

@EX Citer: Also a good idea. I changed the tint of the lighting to a more tan-ish color, so it dosent look too dark, but it gives off a brownish glow. Again, thank you!

@Shadow969: Contrast between what? The crates and the rest of the room, or the textures themselves...

@frazzle: The lighting I have used is the standard lighting added inside of WED. It is nothing special, but it works for the time being... if I feel like going in and coding my own lighting, then that will come after coding begins.

I appreciate that, thank you.

To all, as last time, I will update some pics soon with these changes and hopefully some more additions of my own. I appreciate people not going too hard one me... I am sure that there are many other better ways to be doing the same thing I am doing, but as this is my first project, Im still learning. Thanks again!

I mean contrast between the tiles, and their borders, looks like they are very big and deep
