another npr shader - 11/17/07 21:47

its a combination of vertexbased outlining, edge detection based on the unlighted colors and some objectnormals based krickelkrackel

some more shots of this can be found here

looks really good

Re: another npr shader - 11/17/07 22:45

I havent looked at its code, how does it work because it seems like it would be fairly intesive on your gpu.

Re: another npr shader - 11/17/07 22:58

well, how could you, since the code isnt anywhere however i get between 80 and 400fps if i dont limit the framerate (which i do) so it is not that intensive.

Re: another npr shader - 11/17/07 23:20

oh, for some reason I thought the link at the bottom was the code, so thats why I thought so, I have more screens to look at yay!
Posted By: Pappenheimer

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 00:25

On the screens it looks wonderful, but how does it look in motion.
I fear it will be a bit annoying because of permanent changes of the "krickelkrackel".

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 07:52

its not that heavy, but still i am not 100% sure if i should animate it or better not. i also tried a version where it only changed when the camera is moved, but that was even stranger than keeping it in motion.. and if it is not animated the eye wants it to move

i wonder if there is a way to create a "recordVideo" function now with lite-c ?

edit: but yes, pappenheimer, now after a couple of hours distance it looks better to only change it when the camera is moving..

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 10:04

Awesome stuff ello!

Would you mind to share the code?
Posted By: ello

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 11:34

possibly no, however atm it wont help you, since its not working with the public version

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 13:01

Really nice, what do you want to do with it?
Posted By: frazzle

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 13:07

Great effort again ello, to bad you probably won't share the source code with us

Cheers

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 15:44

@frazzle: Read again
He said he would "possibly" not "mind to share the code".
Which means that he might share the code, or am I wrong here?

However he also said that (because its based on the new A7 beta features, I guess) it won't help us, or rather won't work for us.

Hope I understood you right ello, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I love you! That Shader is fantastic, is it free? And when/where can i download it, if its free?

Great!

Ello, you should sale it Most user around here would kill for it

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 20:33

however, there is one drawback, you cant just apply it to your scenes as the levels textures have to be setup with caution. for example, you cant use gradients or details in your textures, they have to set up as one plain color - notice for example on the terrain what happens if there is an antialiased line between two colors... and you can only use model based levels..

however, if one likes to set it up this way, it works quite nice.

btw, i just found a way to keep the object ppe edges but getting rid of the problems with the gradients and details, however i am not 100% sure, as there is a bit of the previous edges i like. notice on the upper image those edges in the distance and how they look when getting near to them (thats a technical issue) and see on the bottom shot how it looks when getting rid of them

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 21:47

wanna see a video... i still can't imagine the krickelkrackel animation, sounds like it makes you dizzy. please.

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 23:06

ok, i've uploaded a video here ... unfortunately due to fraps recording i came across the lagging of one frame which i didnt notice at 60fps, but going down to 25fps or even lower makes it visible. i dont know if that is a bug, but i remember that once it was possible to set the layer of a view to -1 to prevent it. now this doesnt work, well, when running the engine it isnt really disturbing

btw, its not the best quality, but should give at least a glimpse

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 23:18

very unique style. but i coulnd't play that for more than 10 minutes, the delay outline-krickel makes me sick. the shader cries for an extra big epilepsy warning

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 23:28

as i said, the delay is not that heavy when running ingame. i only noticed it after i saw the fraps sequence. but i am using a laptop here and the display may soften that out, dunno. anyway i hope its a bug and can be fixed

Re: another npr shader - 11/18/07 23:44

Thanks for the video, ello!
It looks great like it is! I love the scene!
Maybe, you could make a game in this scene!
A cartoony adventure?

Re: another npr shader - 11/19/07 02:28

I was just thinking the other day that a game that had a hand drawn feel all the way through would be cool. Out my head you! *puts on tin foil hat* Nice shader btw, as always.

But, do you really want to use it for Games or something like that??

Re: another npr shader - 11/19/07 15:20

that's cool

I'd love to implement something like that into a dream scene, minigame or as an hidden feature. It would surely give alot of contrast to the game feeling.

If you'd just fix the bugs Ello showed it's great to get into realtime testing =)

Re: another npr shader - 11/20/07 12:21

bugger man... i like the delay. espesh a more subtle one on 60 fps but i can understand if some wouldn't desire it. looks fantastic.

i've barely touched my computer lately now that schools over but this kind of stuff is inspiration to sit down and do some experimenting.
