Explicit Shader for cars - 11/04/04 02:56

Hi there!

Animated by the car simulation shown in the showcase forum I started to make a good looking sportscar.
I have experience in attching shaders to models but I did'nt find a shader which renders 50% skin-texture and 50% metal-style-shader.
e.g. there is a blue skin attached to the car with some details and I want it to shine like metal with 50% transparency.
All other shaders I tried were "killing" the attached skin and let the model look transparent by itself.
Please help me - you will be rewarded with some nice screens

Use the enviromental mapping in the wiki. Make your model's skin a targa, and use a medium gray for the alpha map. By doing so, the model will be half its skin color and half reflective.

Thx! I tried it.

I had success attaching the shader.
But there is no result I wished to see.
I draw a green filled skin with and added a alphachannel with medium grey
I also took a cubeimage from the wiki.
It works fine except the transparency of the refelctive.
I just see the environmentmap and nothing of the skin.
Whats wrong??
BTW: I'm using MED & Photoshop

Polygons & TGA - 11/06/04 05:52

Hi there!

Now it works.I changed the code a little and it helped.
A new problem occured which I noticed in neraly every 3DGS version.
Using TGA-Skins causes "transparent" polygons.
e.g. the wheels look normal but some polygons beeing in the background normally seem to be render in front of other polygons. That's not normal and looks ugly.
Does someone know how to fix this problem?

That's normal. See this topic:

Re: Polygons & TGA - 01/25/05 05:53

Hi again!
I'm still using the same shader (from Steempipe I think) and as you maybe know I model a firetruck.
Shader looks good, but how can I realize that just SOME PARTS of the model reflect the environment (show the env.map)?
It should be possible, that with the same skin just the metal looks reflecting and e.g. not the seat or so!
How can I realize it?
Making parts of the TGA Skin transparent didn't help!

Could you send me this shader, please?
Thanks.
