AckBase - Free 3DGS resources repository - 12/30/07 14:26

@moderators:
I didn't know in which section I should put this thread. I put it here because the AckBase will be interesting for the people who want to contribute resources to the community.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi!

Some weeks ago I started the project AckBase.

It is a place where you can upload your resources (=contributions) and share them with the 3DGS community.

Meanwhile the main system is working...
It will probably last some time to fix some things but I think I should show this site to the public now.

You can reach AckBase through the following link:
Link_1 ("http://www.ackbase.net.tc/")
or this link:
Link_2 ("http://user200.lima-city.de/")

You can check the status of the development of the AckBase by clicking on the status button in the navigation. (Which I will create during the next days)

Feel free to post/email comments/suggestions and criticism!

The page is heavily messed up in internet explorer but looks fine with firefox.
Other than that there are many things not yet working alright (for example the links from the news page, the support gives an error) it seems to be well strucured and has some great features. I would like to change my password and I donīt think that you really need a forum there.
How can I upload my own stuff? (this is the most important thing!)
If that really works, it would be a great alternative to the already existing things. Without it is just an other ressource site which is going to fail. And there should be some kind of qualitymanagement. Thing uploaded there have to work without any problems and have to have a good quality. It should be able to comment without registering and there should be a rating system (0-10 points or an even bigger range) to find good stuff easily.

The beginning is quite good

Edit: I see, you have a rating system but the range is to small (why not 0 to 100?).

Yeah when clicking buttons the navigation menu is messed up in Firefox. Just some minor flaw though, can't classify it as 'heavy' . High resolution images could be loaded way faster when saved in a much lower resolution. There are a few other things not quite right but all minor.

If you want a perfect website that matches the global standards, try to let your site pass the w3c.org html validator: http://validator.w3.org/

It's a nice idea hope you wont get problems with using acknex in the name, but I doubt it.

Yes, I forgot to mention this.
As I am usually using firefox I didn't take care about other browsers.
I will try to get more compatibility...

Well I was not sure...so I have implemented one.
I think it can be useful as you will be able to link the resources to threads in the forum.

Yes, I think so, too.

The problem is that my webspace may not contain zip-files and my download-server has limited traffic.
(I am using -lima-city-)

So I found three webspaces that can be used:
Rapidshare -> http://www.rapidshare.com
FileUpYours -> http://www.fileupyours.com/
Localhostr -> http://www.localhostr.com

The user can upload the files at one of these locations or on their own webspace
and a direct link will be on the resource site.
What do you think?

This is of course not an optimal solution and it would be better if I host a large
webspace where the user can upload (via php or so).

Yeah, the rating system.

I decided to rate in 5 stars as you have seen.
Hmm...I really like the stars ...but I think I will perhaps replace them by a bar.

I think it would be possible to rate in form 1 to 100 and show the corresponding stars and the rating.
e.g.:
XXX - 64%
XXXX - 78%
(X = ~20%)

Yes, I will implement this.

Which firefox version have you?

Yes, I already knew that validator, but did not dare to test my site.
I have done that now and it's...well...much work..I will need some time...;)

Thanks for your tips!

I had registered some test users for testing purposes (They have got the prefix 'TEST_').
You can ignore them.
