[FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution

[FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/23/08 17:25

These past few months I have been frequenting these hallowed forums seeking assistance, which I am pleased to say I received.

In return I wanted to pass somethin back and so I have created a FREE model for anyone here who would like it.

First here are a couple of screens of the Alien Critter:

The model is made up from 1968 tris and includes both Diffuse and Normal maps.

The model is also animated with the following 16 frame sets:

Idle
Walk
Jump
Lay Egg
Fight
Death

You can download the zipped .MDL file ( HERE)

The texture seams need a little bit of tidy up work and the model is crying out for different skins, so please post screens of anything you do, don't forget to share \:\)

I hope you enjoy this model and find it useful for your non-commercial projects and I would really like to see any screenshots showing what you do with it.

LEGAL BIT
Please do not re-sell of otherwise distribute this model without written permission from http://www.indiglow.co.uk.

It's pretty high poly but I think
the overall look is really cool ;\)

Thanks!
It is a very nice model \:\)

This is how it looks with normalmapping and blurred stencilshadows (within a not really fitting environment :P):

Re: [FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/23/08 21:12

Awesome, looks really nice with the blurred stencilshadows. I am hoping someone makes use of the 'egg' animation included and gets these things spawning hatchlings all over the place \:\)

@Slin: Can you point me at some threads/articles about the blurred stencils, I am looking for a good shadow solution at the mo.

@aztec: I do have this model in a lower tri count version, I could probably rig it up in an hour or so, let me know if people would prefer it with less polies.

Thanks for the comments guys, glad you like the model.

I will modify my spider script for that \:\)

Re: [FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/23/08 21:18

Here is an example code you should check out: http://www.conitec.net/beta/render_target.htm
But because it is just some basic screenspaceblurr there are also a cuple of problems, mainly the haloeffect appearing around the models. You should also combine it with a depthmap to stop things from getting more blurred in the distance.
Other than that there isnīt much more information about this.

Re: [FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/24/08 19:09

@Slin: Thanks for the link, I wasn't aware of this option at all \:\)

Has anyone had a go at changing the skin yet? I think the model skin is pretty easy to change, maybe add some eyes, or turn the bulbous part of the head into some kind of eye or spitting organic weapon.

@Puppeteer: Would be great to see the model with your spider script, lol could be quite scary if you get enough of them, different sizes....omg breading and eating and attacking and....and....lol

Re: [FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/24/08 20:08

This.... uhm... thing looks absolutely awesome. Reminds me a lot of Xen from Half Life. The only thing is, that the polycount is a bit to high for my personal taste.

Re: [FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/24/08 20:49

I will re-export a lower poly version of it. I created several LOD's for the model, including 2 higher levels and one lower LOD level.

I created this model as part of our pipeline prototype, and TBH it only took me about 3-4 hours to complete, so it maybe is not optimised for game....

Thanks Uhrwerk, comments are much appreciated.

I have some more prototype runs to do, so I will most likely kick out a couple of other models and upload them later, if people here are interested.

Re: [FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/24/08 23:41

A couple of you mentioned that the model was a little high in the polies, being nearly 2k tris. I have taken the liberty of uploading the lower rez counterpart for this model:

Coming in at only 484 tris. Hopefully this now accomodates both ends of the spectrum.

I also resized both skins for this low poly version to better suit performance, 512x512 instead of 1024x1024.

As before the model is completely animated.

I've also included an Egg which I hope one of you guys might hook up in some kind of fun game...

Grab the .zip Here

Please note: I have included both the original 2000 poly model and its 484 counterpart along with the new egg model into a new zip file. The older pack has now been removed from indiglow.co.uk.

EDIT: Sorry to those of you who were happy with the 2k tri model and now have to download again just to get the egg model, but hey, it's only 5mb ;\)

Re: [FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/25/08 16:26

Please let me know if the lower poly version was useful and if anyone gets these critters laying eggs and building a family \:\)

Those that have downloaded it, would truly appreciate a few votes for the download, even a comment or two would be nice \:\)

Let us know if we should make some more free models for you guys, maybe even some suggestions for what we could make.

Note: We make no promise to make them, but if we get chance during our pipeline tests, we will upload some more free goodies

Re: [FREE] Alien Critter - Contribution - 04/27/08 13:56

So another weekend and another pipeline test later and I kicked out a new model, which we are donating to the community.

As per usual this one is free to use in your non-commercial projects etc, etc.

We call this model 'Dino-Chicken'

The model is 920 tris and includes both Diffuse and Normal MAPS along with a diffuse+alpha feather map.

The model is fully mesh animated (16 frames per anim) and includes the following:

Idle
Walk
Run
Jump
Call / Screach
Fight
Death

The model is available to download HERE

Pipeline Help Request:
A little while ago I kicked off a thread about shaders and multi-material application, and frankly I got some very useful thread pointers and have a good sense of how to solve this problem.

However I could do with some more help, so...

If any of you guys out there would like to help me further, this model highlights some pipeline issues quite well. If you think you might be able to help, here is the thread: Multi Model Materials

Thanks, and we hope you enjoy this model. We're thinking about adding a sadle and rider, what do you guys think?

As always C&C welcome \:\)

@Slin: Thought this might better suit your environment ;\)

[FREE] Dino-Chickem & Alien Critter Contribution - 04/28/08 17:53

I had expected a little more reaction than this, considering the reaction from the first model.

Maybe I should have made a seperate post for the submission of the model??? was a little worried about setting off the double-post trolls...

Guess it doesn't matter really,

Re: [FREE] Dino-Chickem & Alien Critter Contribution - 04/28/08 18:39

looks like a digimon
but I like it maybe you could model the feather's I think it would look a bit more realistic

Re: [FREE] Dino-Chickem & Alien Critter Contribution - 04/28/08 19:08

Thanks Aztec \:\)

TBH the model was meant to look a bit silly, and not look very realistic, more of a runtling who hoped to grow up to be an evil eagle \:\)

Glad someone got some enjoyment out of it, even if just for a giggle ;\)

oi oi indiGLOW!
Very nice models and very generous of you to give them away for free.
I downloaded both and might try to setup a basic state-driven "AI" script for that Dino Chicken. If you know Gothic: Something similar to those Scavengers ;\)

thx again and cheerio

Well, I think you could have done that, there are a couple of double posts in Gallery and Projects now anyways. By the way, welcome back (haven't seen you post in a while, I think).

Thanks for the model,

Re: [FREE] Dino-Chickem & Alien Critter Contribution - 05/13/08 19:56

I've been a very busy chap this past year smile

We've been working away behind the scenes though, but no not many posts until now..of course.

I'm glad the models where of some interest, I've been very tempted to kick out a more serious model...still these were quick to make and fun too smile
