Cross Platform Engines?

Cross Platform Engines? - 07/23/09 08:54

Hey, even though we're getting familiar with 3dgs and for some things, it's a great engine, we're looking for one that is cross platform (Windows, Linux, and if possible Mac) for our next game.

We've looked at a few, (Ogre, for example) but most of the ones we've seen are either only windows, or unpayable for indies or else they're specific to one type of game, which we don't want.

Some things that it should feature
-classes (if possible not just structs, but actual classes)
-multiplayer
-Shaders
-possibly a good entity system (heirachical? not a must)

Has anyone seen/used good cross platform engines? Wikipedia's list of game engines doesn't really satisfy me...

It reads like Unity3d or C4 could be interesting alternatives. Both allow classes (C# for Unity and C++ for C4) and both allow to publish to Mac and PC. Multiplayer and Shaders are possible.

If you need Linux as a platform then Shiva is a good option.

yes, but shiva will be even more oddball scripting-wise. to me it seems to take all the problems with basic(structure) and mixes them with the problems with c(variable scope)

Then again I only used it for a couple of days.

As far as other alternatives, frank put up a couple of good ones, and as you've already probably seen, if you have the skill, piecing together an engine with ogre is another good option.

There's Unity, Torque, Shiva etc...

Shiva I've heard has restrictions for programmers. Also, you can't develop on linux (yet), which I'd like to do...
Unity sounds good, Torque sounds even better.
Any cons for those two that anyone knows of?
C4 is interesting as well...

Oh yeah, i forgot about Elemental Engine II. It's free, open source, and you can export to Windows, PSP, Xbox360, PS2, PS3, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS/iDS.

but, it'll take a year to install it. You'll need millions of programs and download 1 GB. And you'll need an account in PhatYaffle to download it and access the wiki.

Anyone tried Leadwerks Engine? http://www.leadwerks.com/index.html

Since we still have time, we may wait until they're done making the engine cross-platform.

Other than that it seems like a perfect engine at low cost.

Does that mean no one here has used leadwerks?

Did you tried Antiryad GX? Easy to install but I never figure how to use it.

Antiraid, is very old, even if it can do advanced technics !
It's world editor is even more worst than 3DGS grin
Lots of things displayed all around , any panel, hard to use i find.
It's an engine passion by it's author not a real professionnal engine for delivering games around the world !

I liked the looks of some of the things that were made using antiryad, but I still think leadwerks looks more attracktive.

Seems like no one knows much about leadwerks here though...

lua scripting... I'd love to do that laugh

I have leadwerks engine, it looks awesome, but after upgrade to ATI card the engine doesn't look OK anymore, I don't use it now.
