Free Antivirus ?

Hi

Is there any free antivirus available on the net,which is powerful and light on the system ?.I am using the free AVG 7.5 and found it to be an excellent piece of antivirus but the damn
thing is expiring in 2 days and needs to be upgraded to 8.00
which costs a damn $54 for a year of license.
Long story short...is there any free avirus out there with good protection ?

You could try free Antivirus,
it's a good program, but it also got some annoying pop-ups, when it updates - but it's free

Why not using more than one software? Those bundles with all those different functions are about never as good as some nice single purpose tools. I'm using AntiVir and the Comodo Firewall. The latter also provides you with some additional protection like reporting when something wants to change the registry and all stuff of that kind providing some nice protection ... although I've disabled it because imo such functions are overkill. Apart from that Comodo probably is the best freeware firewall out there while AntiVir pretty much was the best scoring scanner in some tests for quite a while and it's rather slim and doesn't eat too much performance...

To kill Spyware there still are the standard tools like Spybot S&D...

I use:
AntiVir for Virus protection
and
Zone Alarm as firewall

Spybot Search&Destroy is a good application too.
Thoses three should give you all you need for free

Save yourself a lot of trouble and buy Kaspersky. It's totally worth the money,

avg free is about the best you can go for free. I of course doesnt stand up to paid, but if your looking for free thats about all your gonna get.

hm... I use Sophos... but that's not free i guess...

seriously, use linux for browsing and a seperate windows development pc that has no permanent internet connection.

and spend more hours switching between than it would take to get the cash to pay for a subscription...

even the best antivirus, software firewall, spam filter, bla, can't protect you 100%.

true but being careful, using free stuff, and not being afraid to reformat every once and a while can be.

Nor can Linux...
If you don't know how to secure your Linux, I would recommend using Windows and some AV-Software of your choice. Use the internal Windows Firewall, it is enough protection.
I can't understand those geeks who try to "proselytize" everbody to use Linux. Linux is NOT the best OS in the world. It might be the best for some kind of tasks, but it is definitely no panacea!

Here's what I'm running, and I've had no problems. You have to pay for Spysweeper and it's fast approaching 300,000 on the protection list:

Virus: AntiVir
Spy/Adware: Webroot Spysweeper
Firewall: Zonealarm

avg does the job.

I too have AVG7.5 but from now on you need to buy and upgrade to AVG 8.0 and so
its not free anymore,unless you stick to AVG7.5(which will not get the updated virus defs)
Kapersky again is not free.
A-squared is again only free for 30 days.
I am gonna give Avast 4.7 a try coz it appears free for home use atleast.
Otherwise its going to be Antivir + Zonealarm + some anti spyware

and yeah Vista has its own firewall,which should be good enough I guess
and it has WindowsDefender which is antispyware(unless it is itself a spy :-))

they do this every time, make their website look like they're not offering a free version,
but read each link carefully and you'll find the download
