Recover boot record?

Recover boot record? - 07/16/09 13:39

It seems that my antivir deleted the boot record (i think its called boot record but i am not sure) of one of my harddrives. it was only the one where i was storing games and stuff like that but i'd like to have it back ( laugh ) instead of formating it (as windows suggests at the moment)

How can i fix it?
EDIT: its the partition which was deleted

You mean the master boot record? So you can't boot your harddisk?
In this case you can use a program like Snapshot to make an image of your partition and save it on an other partition or harddisk, install Windows to recreate your master boot record and then recover your image with Snapshot.

But maybe someone has a better idea because mine lasts hours.

@Lukas:
If the master boot record of an hard-disc is destroyed, you can repair it using the Windows Installation Disc.
Just insert it, boot from CD, go to "Repair Windows" and run "fix mbr". At least if I remember correctly from doing so after having crushed mine once wink

@Puppeteer:
So you have multiple hard-drives or one hard-drive with multiple partitions and your anti-virus software destroyed "something" which resulted in you not being able to see the partition/hard-drive and/or access the partition/hard-drive?
To me it sounds as if just the partition-table was somehow deleted.
However I personally have no idea as how to recover it.
But maybe google does?

If your anti-virus just moved the file to Recycle Bin, restore it!!
But, if your anti-virus deleted it COMPLETELY, try to restore it with TuneUp.

As I just read, the MBR holds the partition table of the hard-disc, so yes I guess thats what you need to repair/restore.

When I crushed mine, that was of course the first thing I tried but the f****** Vista Installation disk did not have a Repair Option (like good old XP had) frown
So I had to do it the complicated way. It took about four hours until I could use my computer again frown

Ah ok. I don't know about Vista. As I'm still using Windows XP. But good to know that Vista (or at least some versions of it) do not include that feature.

Okay if i try to run chkdsk on this hard drives he says something like "this thing is so messed up i cant even scan it" and mbr repair says the same thing.

if i want to start windows with this hard drive plugged in windows says "hal.dll is corrupt.. please reinstall it you [censored]" :-P

Any ideas how to save my data =)
it should be pretty easy
my computer just doesnt know that its ntfs (i tried to recreate the partition with the windows setup which didnt worked out [since then the hal error appears too....])

crap, i used to know a bunch of free ones of these, since I used to do a lot of work on several friends computers and constantly was replacing operating systems (and then you always get the accidental wrong drive selection in fdisk) sorry i cant remember any of them.

Had same problem 4 weeks ago. MBR and MFT damaged, no booting up and no NTFS filesystem found.
Used TestDisk ( linux tool, but should run on windows ) to check and repair. Worked great with NO data loss. Should be worth a try.
