lost key file - 09/10/06 18:00

I BROUGHT 3dgs years ago. But could not run it on my machine at that time. I now have a new machine and would like to reinstall. But I do not have my key file disk. I never did have a floppy drive on that machine so I would have to have gotten it by email but its not in my email account. How can I get it?

I also lost my key at one time. I called Contitec and explained my situation (lost the key because my computer crashed (virus)...I mean not only crashed but wiped every file on the computer threee times over...non recoverable...scrubbed the hard drives!). They told me it now costs $40.00 (or something close to that) to get a new key "generated" for you. There is a lot of work that goes into getting you a key....each and every copy of 3DGS is different..and they have to make a key with what you bought...and any fixes....it is hard to explain.. Conetic can explain it better....the point is it eats up a lot of their time trying to get you a new key generated...so they have added a cost to getting a new key...that time they spend on making you a new key could well have been time they could have used in making the engine even better, and easier to use...none the less just wanted to give ya a heads up...on the price.

As a side note, they may or may not wave the fee based on what happened..I dunno, but I do know that once I recieved the new link to get my key, I could not access that site until 4 hours after they said I could...just a heads up in case you run into the same situation.

What I dont understand is why they dont just keep user keys on file and just resend it with proper verification... 10x easier than making a new one.

@Jered: I am not disputing anything about your situation, but how did you not notice your computer being scrubed? Last time I tried that, it took 3 hours to complete, using Segate tools. I realse that is not a virus, but hell... if a virus can scrub a computer that fast, send me a link so I can use it next time I need to reinstall XP .

They keep user keys, I think.
charge for a 'new' key is just an other way to bring beakon at home
PS
and teach to keep confidential info in a safe place

If this is true then I may just make a coaster out of the 3dgs cd. I do not think I should have to pay for something I already paid for.

I tend to agree but I guess it does take work...and conitec has to pay someone to do that work. Not to say that this is fair to the users but is conitec doing the work for free fair either?

Although I dont think the price is justified...It would be one thing if you own com or pro... but what of the users who only have standard or even extra... The price is almost the same as the standard edition. I personally would rather just rebuy standard in that case. Now if I happen to find my old key again Id at least have two copies. I really think the price should be lowered.

UPDATE: Ok I found the diskette that had my keyfile and sucessfully tranfered over that file to a usb flash drive. Installed 3DGS onto my new laptop and used the keyfile that was on the flash drive. Since my laptop does not have a diskette drive. So all is well. The next two problems I will have is determining weather I have A4 or A5. the About MED menu says one thing and the about WED menu says another. In either case it just nice to get 3dgs working again. Second goal is to save up the money to get the Commercial or Pro version for the networking capabilities.

A4 has the old MED/WED-icons. open your gs-folder and check this (the med-icon is a 3d-block)
A5 has the new templates. "A5 templates". create a new project and check if you can choose it

Wed should have the version number your looking for. There might be two numbers. First is the gamestudio version and the second is the wed version. Least thats how it is in A6

I see that so the game studio version number is what I should be paying attention to??

Ok I think it is A5 then because the first version number says 5.0 something( not at that machine right now) Second problem is I tried to build the test level in the tutorial and it was like my machine locked up. Might that be a hardware problem

Here are my specs:
AMD semperon 3000+ 1.8mhz
256MB ram
Via S3g unichrome pro video chip(integrated chip becsue its a laptop)
Windows XP SP$
40GB HD.

Hi!
I think you are talking about "key.exe" don't you?
You need it for getting updates etc.
Could you describe your problem? (more details)
