Hi all, I just had a quick, hopefully easy to answer question. In the past I've been skinning all my 3DGS models with a single skin (image).

Is there a way to assign multiple images "skins" to a single model? As an example one image (256x128) for the head, one image (128x128) for the arms and hands, one for the legs and feet....etc.

Again, I'm hoping this can be done with a single mesh model....I'm not looking to piece together a head, torso, arms and legs with code in the engine.

Thanks,
Todd

from 6.4 on, this is possible and works very well. however, irecommend you to model and skin your bits outside MED, because the skin ed got quite messy due to this feature (and some others).

yes, this can be done, and as DaBro0zar says it is quite messy. i cant recall how, because i avoid it since more skins cause a longer rendering time for the model (the whole model has to be calculated once for each skin, or something along those lines). i think it's something like going to edit->manage skins, then adding new skins. then with a bunch of polygons selected (for the head, for example) and the head skin selected, click "apply skin". then when u unwrap ur model's UVs, the head mesh will appear in the head skin. that should get u started. someone who actually knows what they're doing please correct me where i'm wrong

Interesting, I'll give the "selecting the faces, then selecting the skin, and hitting apply" trick. I'll try to keep an eye and notice if it takes a hit in performance.

I build, layout UVs, rig, and animate my models in maya. I just didn't know if 3DGS could handle per face skin assignments in the same way.

Any other thoughts are welcome and I'll let you know how the test goes.

Thanks,
Todd

Yep. Worked just as you said. After laying out the UV's in Maya and painting a rough skin I opened the model up in 3dGS modeler. Next I selected a cluster of faces (which corresponded to the texture grouping in Maya for each skin. Then opened up the "skin manager" and (with the faces still selected), selected the skin and hit the "set skin" button.

All done.

I haven't noticed a hit in framerate but then again, I'm not using any kind of official tools to measure it.

Thanks again,
Todd
