When I create a new group in the object view I can not then delete the group and the same for entities under a group?

If you want to delete specific objects in a group, select the group then Scope down to it on the menu bar (under object->scope). I don't know why you wouldn't be a be able to delete an entire group. Try selecting it in the Objects tab (on the left side of WED) and then right click on the group and select delete.
