I am working on a group uni project with 4 other collegues. We have to make a fully 3D third person game from scratch and we all have no real experience at all.

A collegue has our main character in 3D studio Max and we want to import it in to the engine. I have tried several times with no real success.

I am reading through the tutorials at the moment, but can any one step by step me through how to import a simple character model of a flying bird (that my collegue has made), from Max in to GS and keep the animation and the textures!

Similarly how do i go about putting this character in to the game? so you can see it from behind in a flying third person perspective?

Many thanks

yes, you can only import MED (*.mdl) files into WED...

Import 3ds (or better .x) into MED first...

This is a common problem, though I don not know how to fix it.

Make sure you save your textures in a format MED handles (bmp, pcx, tga). MED does not handle jpg...

Also, make sure your models appear correctly in MED...

hey, i can get the max file to appear in the MED but if i try to do an engine preview nothing appears on screen, just blue.

Also if i try to import to WED still not visible.

I dont understand what your linked thread meant Demigod.

sorry for being so inept at this.

Your post title = importing max successfuly!, so i believe you havent imported max models successfuly into MED or WED.

Btw, before you can use models made with 3ds max, you need to find and understand a workflow between max and MED in order to use .mdl files in the engine.

Probably you are not seeing the model in MED preview because of two reasons:

1 - you havent pressed the zero key in order to free the default camera, or;

2 - the relative dimensions of the model made in max (units) are very small and you cant see it in MED or in the engine;

3 - even if you see the model in Med preview or the in engine, probably you dont have textures and no animation;

The link above tells you possibles workflows to "importing max successfuly" into 3dgs engine.

Right i tried exporting the file as a .X file from WED and importing back in as a model in MED but still no luck.

Is the MED as good as Max because it looks like I am going to have to get the lads to make the models in MED.
