Hi, I would like to know how legal it is to make a remake of Counter Strike in Game Studio? Something like Counter Strike : Source.
Can I use the original textures, or should I use new ones, new models? And what about remaking maps like cs_assault etc.

1. It isn't
2. No
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. No

But if you just want to have some fun, it doesn't matter if it is legal. But why remake something when you can make your own new game? Game development is really a creative process-- creating settings, characters, stories, mood, tension. It isn't just programming and modelling.

Why not figure out what it is you like about the game in the abstract sense, then make something of your own using those qualities.

Nice and short! Thanks
But what about other stuff - the buying menu, the guns, the HUD, etc.?
To make it more clear - what should I change for it to be legal, but still have the look, the feel and the gameplay of the original counter Strike?

Never use the name. Names are trademarked and thus you should stay clear of them. You can modify the name but be sure that it's not the same.

Avoid exact textures and models. Even if you create art yourself, if it's something that the CS people consider theirs, you may be in trouble.

No problem on the HUD or gameplay. These elements can't be copyrighted or patented or trademarked. Hence you can replicate that style of HUD and play--but only the style--safely.

In short, stay away from copying anything art related: textures, models, levels, music. Instead, distill the essense of CS and make everything else yourself.

Thats is actually pretty good, because I have a lot of nice high-res textures and cool models.
But I'm worried about the fact, that I can't recreate the old CS maps... Because what I want to accomplish, is to make a CS game for my friends where we can play without cheaters. And of course we all like those old maps

You can modify the map in small, indistinguishable ways to make it your own.

I'm not really sure that you can recreate a map so accurately that the CS people will notice so you might be safe there... but if you plan to exactly mimic a map, then you might be asking for trouble.

Keep in mind that nothing you do will likely bring the attention of the CS people, but it's a good idea if you plan on developing games to not start bad habits early.

Yeah, I know it's a bad habit, but the whole idea is to mimic the map in such a way, that the average CS player will know where to go, and what to do

well just make it so it dynamically loads the map, that way you can have your own maps, and for just your buddies, use maps like counterstikes.

I've got a CD with over 1000 maps
If you're interested, PM me, but I recommend if you build similar maps, don't sell it
