Very small difference. I just turned 17 a month ago, but I learned HLSL about 4 months ago, if not more...
It's not that hard, you just have to want to learn it.

the tutorial sebe mentioned is a really good starter. i used it yesterday and i'm really starting to get the hang of shaders now... once u do the tutorial, look at hlsl shaders on the wiki and just try and read what they're doing (the comments help), and look up any terms or functions you don't know on msdn.
