Is it possible for a post-processing pixel shader to have access to variables that are defined in other wdls? For example, could a shader (using a few equations) be programed to output darker or lighter pixels based on how close they are to an object in your level?

yep, some skills can do that, look in the manual under user defined effects I believe is what it's called
