I think I am just gonna throw this one at you, see what you think about it. I am reading a very interesting book about it at the moment and I would be greatly interested in your oppinon about the topic.

Well I think that none of us can have an opinion about this topic
We can just read books same as you do
By the way which book is it?

The strong point of the string theory is its math
The theory can explain all the known particles and force including the gravitational field
However the string theory is not supported by any lab evidences
In other words
The physicians already know what results they must achieve, thus , they , so to speak, play with the equations as long as they get what they want to get

This is the main critic to the theory and this is also the origin of the string theory

As you probably know the Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic field and the Einstein's equations for the gravitational field are similar but not compatible

You can merge them , adding a fourth spatial dimensions
However this is just a math trick

Later . for the same reason, other dimensions have been added up to 10 spatial dimensions + time

The book is "The elegant universe" by Brian Greene. I think there is a documentary film with the same title out there as well.

I hardly know anything about string theory right now myself, but I was just interested in whether you people think of it being possible. I mean, tiny little strings make up everything that exists?
And how can modern religions explain that to us? I mean, can Christianity offer an explanation for those strings - just assuming that they do exists? It struggles with explaining how the Big Bang and Evolution, two theories that have been proved right (I hope I am not gonna open a big discussion about those two now...) fit into the bible and so on...

That was basically all I wanted to know from you guys. I do realize that you can't know everything Just thought it might be an interesting topic to talk about

EDIT: Here I found the documentary... Watch it, it is very interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZ8k_RccgG4

Thanks I read "The fabric of cosmos.." By Brian Greene
Well ,what you are interested is just that kind of answer the nobody ,can seriously give you

Mr Green who is a great scientist, claims that the theory of string is the only possible explanation
Mr Penrose , who is also a great scientist , claims that it is (more or less ) a nonsense

Do you think that my or anybody's else opinion , here in this forum, might be of any value ?

We can just read and wait....

For the time being the string theory is not supported by any lab evidence, the reason being that no particle accelerator can deliver the huge amount of energy which is needed to create the heavy particles which are forcast by the string theory

It is just a matter of time, the new CERN lab is under costruction...
we will see...

I dont think this theory can have any impact on the religion.
It doesn't matter if God created a string rather than an atom, assuming that God does exist, of course
However mr Green , as far as I know, is a declared atheist

Maybe not of any value, but nevertheless interesting...

The amounts of energy that would take are so large... I don't believe that we will see that happen in the nearer future, maybe not even in our lifetime

Well, personally, I doubt it is true , it looks like a "plastic" theory.

At the beginning there was one extra dimension, as I said in my previous post. Something did not work, so a new one has been added, later an other one and so on, up to 11 dimensions...

Some specialists even claim a that time should be split in two parts.
so in total, 10 spatial dimensions plus a main and a secondary time

Probably if you play with numbers you can demostrate everything

The amount of energy is large but it is not not so large

The CERN lab can confirm or reject this theory

Mmm, interesting, why would they want to do that? Local and global times?

I'm sure they'll figure out something...

There is an other way which is much more intuitive ,to prove the existence of extra dimensions beside the test in the last generation particle accelerators

The attractive force between two masses depend on :

distance^2

You can ask the questions :

- why the exponent is "2" instead of , for example , "1.99" or "2.11" ?
- why is it a constant ?
- why is it "2" also for the electric field ?

The answer is :

Because we live in a 3d world

The surface of a 3D sphere is proportional to : radius^2
If you put a mass in the center of the sphere, the intensity of the flux of gravitational field on each portion of the surface of the sphere depend on radius^2

The extra 7 dimensions are so small that , in general, they can not have any influence
However nowadays it is possible to measure the attractive force between two very close objects
The exponent "2" should increases if extra dimensions do really exist but all the tests proved that it remains constant

Cosequently the supporter of the string theories had to admit that the extra dimensions must be even much smaller than they expected

Obviusly it might be true but these tests cast a shadow on the theory

There are maybe 5 people in the world who claim to understand string theory...
... and 4 of them are lying.

Just 5 people who want to get into the history books, the other hundreds, maybe thousands of people who are right about their ideas keep it silent and wait for scientific proof .
