this isn't with the intention of spamming, but the intention of adding to the emphasis on such good software.

blender.

"good" software is a strong word for a software that holds the freeware-3dtool-monopoly: there are no real alternatives for blender in the freeware section. i'm no fan of blender, if you can afford it, try a mid-cost 3d package like c4d (€800), lightwave ($900), truespace (now on sale for $395, otherwise around $600). programs that i would exclude from the list of "good" animation software are milkshape, caracterFX, pacemaker, fragmotion and gamespace.

Do not use gameSpace 1.6 and/or trueSpace 6.6 for your animations.
It's the hell. Believe me.

It's not free, but cheap at $20, try fragMotion. It exports out to many formats including 3DGS ones, and it works perfectly and is one of the better options if you don't need a full modeling app. It's getting it's next long in development update early next year.

because they don't support interpolation curves ("tweening"), NLA ("mixing") and advanced vertex weighting. well, i'm not sure about gamespace because that's the only one i didn't test with animations, but it's said to be that way by frustrated gspace owners.

Did anybody test Messiah ?
It is an animation only software at a reasonable price ( 300 usd ) which supplies all the advanced animation features of the high end packages
It exports the .x file
Gamespace is a disaster particulary for animation
Fragmotion and character fx are very good animators ,for the price
MilkShape is not so suitable for animation but in my opinion it is very good to attach vertices to bones, the more user friedly method I know, in my opinion
