Radakan Development Crew presents:

Radakan

Brief Description

Radakan is a single-player sandbox 3D RPG, in a dynamic and dark fantasy world.

We are making an RPG, but our goal isn't to set the player on a primary quest to "save the world". Our goal is to use core elements of an RPG, so that the player can strive to create his or her ideal sandbox reality. This creates a sense of accomplishment that is absolutely vital to allow players to bond with the game environment.

This implies several things:

For more information, see our (long) design document.

Do note: We are currently making an alternate version of our original setting and gameplay, making the needed adjustments in order to qualify for GameDev.net's 4E6 contest.

Target aim & Compensation

The gameplay is directed towards people who appreciates a deep RPG, with a strong emphasis on roleplay.
When finished, the game will be released as freeware. The engine is licensed under the GPL.

If you're looking for money, sad to say you're looking at the wrong project. We can only promise you a great deal of experience from working alongside a dedicated team with talented members. If you haven't worked in a team before, you will surely learn a lot about collaboration and communication. Alongside the obvious improvement you will get in your specialization, you might learn some new new aspects of game designing as well, seeing as we try to work closely together.

Technology

Our engine is written in C++, using various open source libraries and tools.

Libraries
- Ogre
- CEGUI
- Boost
- Audiere or FMod
- OgreOde and Ode
- OIS
- TinyXML

Tools
- CMake

Talent Needed

Jobs
  • Tools specialist
Our modelers mainly use Blender for their modeling, and we have decided to have various tools created (Python) in order to construct our game world with the help of Blender.
  • Engine programmer
We're looking for experienced C++ programmers. No beginners.
  • GUI Specialist
He (or she) should be capable of both designing and developing the GUI.
  • Concept Artists
We welcome any creative artist interested in bringing our many rich descriptions to life.
  • 3D Artists
We're looking for modelers who can deal with varying amounts of concept art and descriptions. Preferrably capable of animating, and willingness to do so.

Anyone who's made a contribution would be credited in full and even more so should you work actively enough to join the core members.

General Requirements
We are looking for members who really want to contribute to this project.

We do not want you if you're just looking to get a little bit of experience in team-work.
We do not want you if you just want to see your name in the credits when the game is done.

We want members who like our concept and our goal - to make an RPG with real roleplay and a fresh theme, lore, and setting. Without genuine interest and involvement, the motivation will quickly crumble.
We want members who truly want to help the team progress by making a real effort. Of course, we are all indie developers, so we don't expect paid working standards. But we usually encourage every member to set up their own to-do list along with some obtainable deadlines.
You can read more about a good working environment on our forum (thread coming soon).

Communication
- We require that all applicants have a regularly used MSN account or IRC client in order to simplify communication. (IRC info: #Radakan on chat.freenode.net ).
- We also expect members to check up regularly on our forums, for latest news and notifications.
- It is also a big plus if you're capable of giving constructive criticism to your fellow workers, also in different departments than your own.

Portfolio
If you decide to apply for the team, it is preferred that you provide us with a sample of your previous work. Meaning, if you are a programmer it would be nice if you once created a program, or if you are a writer you might have a story to show us.

Contact
If you want to apply, it is preferred that you contact our PR manager, Sadr. Should I not be available, try contact our lead designer and programmerTinus or Ben, the lead writer, through MSN or IRC (see above).

Team Structure

Currently we've had a recent rebuild of our team-structure, making it hard for us to give any exact numbers on active members. Just know that even though some people come and go, there are some of us in this project who are determined to see this project to the end, come storm and fire!
Memberlist.

Previous Work by Team

As the team we are now, we have never done any previous work together besides what we have accomplished so far. Individually though, most of the team members have got remarkable experience, always ready to share it with the rest.

Additional Information

Our main recruiting-thread can be found at at GameDev.net's forums, always going through changes and updates, now looking ahead to a much needed update again with all the new progress that has been done.

Videos
- Ninja talking: As you can see from this video, our user interface is getting there. We have already started implementing the chat system.
- Game interface: This video shows more of the user interface, specifically the main menu. Obviously, more work needs doing here, especially regarding skinning the interface.
- Tripping over: Currently, the physics allow us to 'trip' over the fence.
- Pusing a ninja: More physics as we start pushing Ninjas around.

Concept Art
One of our humanoid races, the Xemnas. - By CP.

"Unorthodox weapon" from concept

Audio
Ambient Arachnyd theme - By Jim
Zharg Morg theme

Hi Guys,

I can contribute some creature concept art for you and maybe some models. (if I get time.)

You can see a few small examples on my site. (which is in my sig)

My site is in need of an update and a few of the images are just place holders.

PM me if you are interested.

On behalf of the Radakan Development Crew I'd like to bring out thanks to all the people who have applied so far, who are now actively working with us on concepts and models for the game. The response here at the Game Studio Forum has been great!

Although all positions should still be considered open, we are now shifting the focus on to 3D artists and engine programmers, making these talents the most wanted. Anyone fitting the talent needed description should still feel free to apply though.

With certain events having led to our Art Director having to resign, we are now in search of a new Art Director. If anyone feel they might be suitable for this task, please don't hesitate to contact us and we will discuss it properly. This is rather urgent, as the contest deadline is only about a month away, and we really need our artists to stay structured, while the rest of the managers can focus on their own appropriate tasks.

Please PM me on this forum, or and an e-mail to contact [at] radakan [dot] org

And now you're a part of the team and have already done a very nice restructure of our Wiki. Time just flied by

3D artists still wanted, Blender-users in perticular as those are the ones we can offer the most support amongst our own.

Hello,
I'm interested in working on a project with a team. I've been using 3D Game Studio for about 6 years now, and I am pretty competant in all the aspects of designing a game. However, the biggest lesson I've learned is that It's impossible to make a (good) game without a team.

I'll tell you my strengths, and you can decide if you want my help or not. I pretty good at designing textures (including normal mapping), in-animate objects, like buildings and furniture, terrains, menu design and I'm not bad with c-script either. I have not really focused on any one of these areas, because I've been trying to do all of them. That's one reason I want to work with a team.

I'd like to get into the gaming industry, but I need to build some sort of portfolio. Being able to focus on a single type of task, ideally level design related, would really help me do this. Let me know if you're interested. I can send some jpgs of my work if you like.

Michael Schmidt
