is there anyway to turn off the "guarand" shading on models when running the game engine?

yeah..by using a shader to replace that default shading

you can also create hard edges in MED.
If you create a block just click on "Soft" and its changing to "Hard".
Now you have a block with hard edges.

It depends on if the vertecies of the different triangles are merged or not
