my player model won't cast a shadow even though the shadow button is on.

can anyone help?

Does your model have a skin texture with alpha channel (e.g. a 32 Bit TGA texture)

do you want to cast a shadow on a surface that has a shader applied, like normal mapping?

I want to cast a shadow period.

all my other models cast shadows except the hero.

a closed mesh is one where all the polygons form a boundary and you cannot see inside the mesh anywhere.

There is no standard way to close a mesh but make sure you have no gaps in the model. If you do, then there is probably some way to fuse/weld vertices in MED, there is in 3ds max.
