Hi
I have created a 3d landscape for a racing game. but now a friend who writes the code for this project said it's easier to make a collision detection with a highmap instead of a model. so is there a possibiltiy to transform a model into a highmap? I need only to transform the street and the area around the street.
if there is no possibility to transform it with the 3d gamestudio (and i think so) is there a possibilty with other programms? i have tested to export the model from the 3d gamestudio in blender where i exportet it to .raw file.this file i imported in terragen but i think it was the wrong raw file because i doesn't work...
please help, i don't want to create the hole landscape again and i hate to design highmaps because i'm better in modelling. my highmaps are often looking very strange...

I only know one way, but you still need 3dsmax.
First you export the model, than import.
In 3dsmax choose in the menu RENDER and RENDER IN TEXTURE give the parameters some values and choose from the list HIGHMAP.
click render and you get a black and white imagefile of the terrain that you can save. wink

I have tested it in the trial of 3dsmax but it only creates a simple black picture. Even with some different parameters it was always the same result.
could you please post the parameters you use?

1st select your object go on menu render, than "rendertotextur"
go to the frame Mapping Coordinates and then switch to USE EXISTING CHANNEL use Channel 1. then frame output click add and choose HEIGHMAP then at TARGET MAP choose BUMP cklick on the render size I would take 800 x 600 px and click render. finish.
when I read your post, you write "creates a simple black picture do you mean a pic that are whithe, grey and black, but thats a heighmap, otherwise, if you mean a normal map, then do the first step aggain up to add a HEIGHMAP and then change it to NORMALMAP if you want it. sry for my bad english

sry for my late answer but i was a little busy (festivals and so...^^)
with simple black picture i mean that the picture is only black with no other colours

when i chose use existing frame there is no channel. the window where you can chose the differnet channels is empty...

mhh are you sure, what for version of max do you use. i've found it in max 7, 8 and 9. you have to search mapping coordinates under the frame projection mapping.
