1st select your object go on menu render, than "rendertotextur"
go to the frame Mapping Coordinates and then switch to USE EXISTING CHANNEL use Channel 1. then frame output click add and choose HEIGHMAP then at TARGET MAP choose BUMP cklick on the render size I would take 800 x 600 px and click render. finish.
when I read your post, you write "creates a simple black picture do you mean a pic that are whithe, grey and black, but thats a heighmap, otherwise, if you mean a normal map, then do the first step aggain up to add a HEIGHMAP and then change it to NORMALMAP if you want it. sry for my bad english
