Why do publishers do that? its retarded, that if I want to listen to a song on my computer, or watch a movie while setup is running, that for 10 minutes I have to listen to crappy background music that has a quality slightly better than that of an elevator. AND THERE IS NEVER A WAY TO KEEP YOUR COMPUTERS SOUND ON, BUT TURN IT OFF.

Its never not been a problem for me.

Yes there is, im on vista and all i do is click on the volume icon, mixer, then put the application (installer) on mute.

And its like in elevators and call centers, they play music that is in-offencive, this is so they don't get complaints about the music.

I got to say I really enjoy it. The music, the concept art - it makes the installing of a game an immersive experience... almost as good as playing the game itself wink

In this case it'd seem no music would result in even LESS complaints

hmmmmmmmmmm.......
perhaps an option during the install
to disable this?
or during first run...a key or mouse clickey
option to not hear this. Or simply press esc key to go thru the various screen to get to the game menu.
I do this with the game Might and Magic 6 that I'm playing. Also in the game features menu I turn off the music volume but keep the sound volume on.
So then, I can listen to real Might and Magic music like: Waiting for Magic by Ace of Base, I Cant Wait by Nu Shooz, and especially, Point of No Return, Love is Your Destiny, You're the One That I Need, and December by Expose. This music also goes good with Wasteland and Fallout 1,2 as well. wink

it's funny when you come across a game that for some reason decides to stream the music from the cd it's installing everything from

becomes really bad, and has all these short 'laggy' gaps, and then large gaps while its trying to work out whether to read the music or the install files
don't forget that it goes for 2 minutes and loops again and again
then you really need a volume thing for it

In the games that I professionally make, the
very first interaction with the user is always the question
"Do You want Sound Yes/No"
before any sound reaches the output
(mobile gaming, especially import there as users are often
not in provate but in public places)

I beleive this thread was reffering to the installation of the game (when music is playing), not when playing the game.

I referenced this to the first interaction the user has with the game, wich is the installation on PC, and the first start on the mobile devices.
The same topic. Its about forcing or not the user to have a music / sound.

I beleive it is just a rant from LC about him installing a game with annoying music in the background, not about the first instance of a game.
Because starting a game at the main menu etc. is not the same as installing it.
