I have a model in Maya that is animated using both joints and blendshapes. I'm trying to export its animation into Gamestudio 7. In Gamestudio, the animation is all vertex animation, I am not using bones. I'm using the maya fbx exporter and MED's import function.

My problem is that when I export all the meshes on the character, only the animation driven by bones makes it into MED. However when I only export the mesh with the shape driven animation (the head), I do see the shape animation in MED (but not the bones animation).

Can someone illuminate what's going on here?

What's confusing me is that I am not importing the bones animation as bones animation - i.e. once the model is in MED there are no bones, it's all vertex animation. So shouldn't both types of animation come through? Why would Gamestudio care how it was authored in Maya?

Does anyone know where in the pipeline this limitation comes from? I can think of these possibilities:

1. The fbx exporter only exports one type of animation at a time

2. The fbx exporter exports all the animation, but the shape animation is exported differently from the bones animation

3. MED only imports one type of animation at a time, regardless of whether it's all supposed to be baked.

Thanks smile

I would love to hear an answer to this question as well!

FYI, I ended up just abandoning the blendshapes and rigging everything with bones. Results aren't as good of course (you get much nicer facial expressions with blendshapes).
If you are just trying to export everything as vertex animation there is supposedly a plug-in that can do this. It comes with the Extras download. I haven't tried it though.
