shows how good lighting and atmospheric effects make such a difference to the mood and visuals of a game smile

lots of places where i didn't like the lighting in that game. this link helped me pick out what it was: everything is fluffy.

all the lighting is made out of cotton wool. the bigger the light-source, the softer the shadows. the lighting in that game implies enormous light-sources, ruining the sense of scale and making it all seem too unrealistic. some of that is perhaps because of their extensive use of lightmapping.

secondly, the brights were too dark. i won't go so far as to say the darks were too bright, as it's often frustrating in a game to go in a dark area and it's literally pitch black, but the brights often (definitely not always) didn't look bright.

thirdly, everything looks almost like it's filtered. one area is distinctly orange; another area dark green; if it's not a screen filter that they shouldn't have used, i guess their lighting needed more "white" mixed in.

just my opinion on the game. i found the article helpful, but only for quantifying my disappointment with the visuals.

PS: still a good game.

yeah it's not the best lighting out there, but it shows the difference with light added in

recently watched a friend play it, and the lighting is somewhat better than i remembered. i guess it's mostly those screenshots that weren't the best.
