Gamestudio= Reliable game engine to run your game, model editor, world editor, and lite-c script editor. Essentially, all you need to create a descent game. Throw this in with GIMP (FREE) to create textures, and BLENDER (FREE) to create some descent characters and entities, and you're good to go. Maya= Professional modeling software to create 'next gen models' to add to your GameStudio game. Used to create Resident Evil 4, and SOCOM CONFRONTATION for the PS3. (Other programs were needed of course). Either way, YOU WILL NOT be able to create a 'next gen' game that can 'compete' with HALO or SOCOM by yourself, or with a light-wallet. Dream smaller Make a simple game just to say you made a simple game. And then, take it from there. Hope this helps! -Kravenwolf

The bottom line is that you cannot make a next gen game with any of the indie game engines. That means gamestudio, torque, wintermute,... whatever. To make a next gen game on any of the platforms you need a next gen engine, those usually start at $30 grand. Gamestudio is a nice complete package, you can make a fun game, you can make a popular game, you may even make a game that makes you a little money but you won't make a next gen game.
Warez?? maybe... there are people with that kind of funds laying around. Usually they just end up with a nice shiny copy of Maya on their computer and never use it.
If you are serious about this, and you have a legit copy of Maya: Buy the latest photoshop suite (including vector graphics) Buy a $5000-$6000 computer set up. So if you have the skills this $10,000 investment will give you a nice little graphic arts studio. You can make money with that if you have the skills... web design, adds etc. Use those graphic arts skills to make games with gamestudio. It would be great for that. You will probably need to buy your programing. If you are not interested in graphic arts Maya was a really poor investment. Way to expensive to be using for just making low poly game models!

Yeah, the next gen debate For my post I would define a next gen engine as one that can manipulate the high rez graphics that can only be played fully on the latest PCs or consoles. I think that was what he was asking about. My understanding is that is where the indie game engines hit the wall. Personally I think next gen is overrated (game design is more important) but I think the graphical capabilities of the big engines is where you start paying the large dollars. And of course I am only repeating what I have read since I am only cabable of making games to amuse my family and friends
