The tutorial seems outdated and is referring to a "switch to bone mode button" that doesn't seem to exist in 6.896.

I just need to find the names of the bones so I can manipulate them separately in script.

hi,

ahhmm,...when you select a Bone in MED, the Name is shown down in the Line. I dont understand your Problem yet.

But you will get an big problem if you manipulate the Bones via Script and the "ent_bone..." commands!
Collision Detection dont work because you have no Chance to update the BoundingBox until now.
I run in this problem two weeks ago and it was discussed here in the forum.
