Neon art style diorama

Hello, I'm fiddling with a new art style, and while I think I have something going on, I don't think I'm done.

I could use advice, suggestions on new things to do/use/add and critique on what people don't like.

I'm testing art styles using dioramas, ie: it looks like a game, but is not. All the RTS units just loop on a set patrol path (RTT total war-esk units to be exact).

The airplane's movement is the one thing that is not semi-final. It will be better, with tilt and roll in it's movement. Everything else is final, except that I'm willing to change anything.

I like the flowers, but in a not-too-sure sorta of way. Maybe if I added more, added some 3D-ness, made a jungle out of it?

Suggestions on using contrast(-ing colours) would be cool too.

The game would have small levels, so what you see is probably close to an entire level. Also, I would use other base colors, blue, yellow, green, etc for other levels, broken up into worlds to make sense.

I was inspired from Darwinia (bits & pieces), Strange Attractors (main lvl), and green computer levels of World of Goo (lots of alpha fading, and I don't yet have enough).

Direct download of .zip
(It's a small .zip of a exe & resources. It does not install anything, and does not do anything annoying, like change the registry or add icons. Work safe.)

Thanks!

The art style is really nice already.

How about you try to make also this "glare" effect on the
levelstructure.
Or use a second very transparent bigger model for each
red level-block, making them look a bit more "blurred"
(its of course a performance question)

try to increase the camera.arc
this increases the "3D" ness of the scene.

Also the map should scroll when touching the sides
with the mouse cursor. (additionally to the wasd)

I really don't get what you're trying to do. Making a game that looks like a game but isn't...? Well... this stuff doesn't really remind me of a game at all. It sure looks cool, but it just doesn't remind me of a game.
As for the art:
-The airplane's glowing sprite disappears if you look at it from the bottom. I would either add white "glow"-sprites to more places of the level, or else leave them out. Having just one (plus the patroling units) looks weird, I think.
-The level's built out of geometry, it's 3d. But on the tower thing your have two sprites that are 2d. I'd replace them with 3d geometry...
-I like the flowers. But I don't know if they "fit"...?
-The patroling is very cool. But it doesn't remind me of strategy games, maybe because those games have little animated guys, and not primitives, that patrol.

"I like the flowers, but in a not-too-sure sorta of way. Maybe if I added more, added some 3D-ness, made a jungle out of it?"

I would make a jungle out of it for sure and add more colors than red to the environment. As it is, it sort of conflicts with the other style of black, very edgy and red. I wouldn't make a rainbow game out of it at all, but take a look at the latest Prince of Persia game and how it handles colors.

You will really need to decide on a colorscheme and go from there.

You've got the 'Tron' style here a bit (without the glow), but to be honest, that's artistically speaking quite boring if you only use red and black.

Awesome. The gamestudio community comes through with teh feedback!

I'm going to really work on this for a day or two, and I'll post the results here.

@Germanunkol, I wanted to work on the game art (my weak point) without having to spend as much time on the programming. I figure I'll have a headstart when I start writing the game if I have this mockup looking good.

Wow! cool effect, I like smile

The red is a bit on the bright side though so you could add contrasts or gradients for a freaky overall scheme.
Theres so much you can do with it.
Id wondered what such a look might be like after playing halo a few years ago and marvelling at the sprite lights and panels.

Inovative and interesting smile

I would really suggest hitting the vidoe store and trying to find an
ANCIENT move called "TRON" that PHeMoX mentioned.
I remember this move from my youth and visually it was very similar
to what you are doing.

For entertainment value its not up to much, except in a "retro" way,
but the visuals in it may give you some ideas and inspiration.

Movei review here. Not many screenshots though.
