Star Armada Attack (retro game entry)

This is my contest entry to the retro game contest. I decided I'd make a rather loose interpretation of Gradius, which I had recently gotten to play and liked it a lot.

At the same time I wanted to take the idea of retro literally as well, by putting a retro sci-fi look on the game.

This version of the game has 4 different enemy types, two of which appear as powered-up boss versions before they become regular enemies. Also the progression through the game is based on how many enemy spacecraft you've blown to smithereens, not how long you've been flying and dodging things.

In short:
-Retro Sci-fi style spaceships
-Original retro soundtrack
-Every time you defeat a boss, the camera pulls back making the play area bigger
-Enemies that were once bosses become regular enemies which tremble before your mighty lightning blaster
-The only on-screen clutter is the instructions, which go away when you start the round

This demo has only 3 waves of enemies and 2 bosses, but should give you an idea of what a complete version of the game could be like.

You can download it from my site, www.clydeshaffer.com

lol... the game is not bad

Ja, das Programmieren ist schwer und zerreißt einem manchmal den Kopf. Aber dran bleiben ist alles dann kommt man auch weiter.

This belongs to the project forum, not into the showcase. Sorry, but this is no professional work... laugh

Added some more pics, showcasing two of the bosses and also the scope of the game after defeating the second (also currently the final) boss.

Sorry, but I've to agree. The last time I've been in this forum I see a lot of projects in the showcase which are not suitable for it.
In future it would be nice if you could put such things in the projects.
That shouldn't be offensive or anything like that, but I think that would be better to let "huge" and/or time-consuming projects give more chances to be seen.

Anyway, it looks like a good start so far!

(Sorry for the off-topic)

Regards
TSGames

Eh, the screenshots don't really do it justice anyway. I intended for this game to have a smooth graphical style and spent much of the time developing this game on shaping the models and tweaking particle effects to make everything look nice and that visual assets didn't clash with each other. But that gets lost in the screenshots 'cause the retro-flat-colors-and-outlines style doesn't scale down or compress well frown

Anyway it's all the more reason you should download the game!! and vote for me! wink
Sorry about the forum confusion- I'd thought the showcase was for projects with screenshots.

Wow, really? Thanks!

I made some changes to the game since the contest, really just cosmetic though.
All the enemies fly up ahead of you in the background, before making U-turns off-camera and flying back to attack you.
Also I made it change music after each boss fight to a new song- currently I have Gradius music added in to test the implementation of this but later I'll make some new and better songs.
