WED shift key zooms view out.
WED shift key is also used to duplicate pieces-- hold down, hold shift, move piece.
So when attempting to copy an object using shift and drag, you get viewpoint moving out as well.

Check Preferences. Maybe you've assigned the Zoom key to Shift. It's unassigned by default, so this problem does normally not happen.
