Hey guys,

I know that this is a very broad question and not 100% on-topic but I'm certain that you can help me on it.
I'm currently working on a research project for university and we're trying to find solutions to improve future traffic coordination in big cities (up to the year 2030).
I believe that proper design and programming of AI will be of particular importance for solving this issue.

Do you have any ideas (algorithms, AI design, etc, what else could you think of?) for improving future traffic coordination? If not yourself, do you know anybody who is a specialist and could help me on that?

Thanks already very much in advance for you help, I'm looking forward to your replies!

Florian

Hey Florian,

fwiw, you are completely wrong here. The reason is simple, programming games doesn't require any AI at all, what we need is something that looks like it would behave autonomic and realistically, but isn't. This is because real AI requires a huge amount of performance, and building a simple traffic system that looks good as long you don't look to deep is far more simple and does the job as well.

I'm not even sure if you want real AI, I assume that you already have knowledge about traffic, most likely more than anyone here on the forum, since you are already working on this topic. So isn't what you actually want a program which simulates traffic based on the known rules and you can change the parameters of the simulations, for example how the traffic lights work, and look if it brings you the desired change?

I've never dealt with anything like this but I've thought about it before.
I think what is more important than an algorithm is the real-life data about traffic patterns, events, and locations of businesses and residences.
Well timed traffic lights and large interchanges help of course but I think each situation needs individual analysis. Sensors (and maybe cameras) would be important to any traffic system to identify where the traffic actually is at any given time. Real time data is what you need and the ability to use that data to manage things like traffic lights and reversible lanes.
I don't know, just some thoughts of mine on the subject.
GStudio could be used to create a traffic simulator but - again - the simulator will only be useful if it uses real-world data. Data that might be hard to estimate 18 years in the future.

Take a look at the latest AUMs, there should be car physics plus traffic example made by painkiller.

if I have time I read ai related articles, and found somewhere car + pedestrian traffic simulation softwares, simulation of crowd on street and flowing out of buildings...

one of them is called as continuum crowds... as I know these systems usually work with potential fields.

and there are open source projects too at some universities... but this is much more than simple game ai...

maybe I have some links bookmarked, if you need just send me a message and I'll try to find it.

I ask for help
I'm working on a simulation program. How to detect if there are traffic signs, which states banned right turn, left turn prohibited or forbidden to stop, and so forth, so if breaking it would reduce the value.
I am very grateful if anyone would help.
