Hi
after 2 years i made a racing game with 8 large level.
and player can select one level and race with others.
the problem is in memory management.
because player can choose level , in one or two hours i must load many different level. and after some times memory will be full and 3dgs make memory errors.
is there any tip or trick to manage memory?


and i have some question:
1- i use many ent_create after level_load, the question is if engine release it's memory or i must do it?

2-if you make a program that in a while make an entity and after one second use ent_remove,you can see increase memory in task manager.it seemed ent_remove don't release all of memory for one entity. is there any best way(what aboutgetmem or setmem )

3- do you know any program for memory management?i use taskmanager.

4-how can i free a skin of a material with shader ? and what happend for that shader? is it make an error?

5- is level_load garantee that all memory of previous level is free? what is remain in memory?

6-after some times and fully random , i have an error in load_level command.do you know why ?

7- i have problem with settriggerflag after some level_load.do you have any suggestion to useing it?

1. The engine does on a new level_load or as soon as you use ent_remove.

2. To create entities you should use ent_create and nothing else. If the memory continously goes up there is something wrong with you code. Please show it.

3. You can use gamestudios debug panel. This will give you far more detailed overview.

4. I'm not sure I understand that question. You want to remove the material? You can use ptr_remove. For removing a bitmap as well.

5. level_load removes everything from the previous level, i.e. all entities, geometry etc. Script create content will remain in memory, e.g. bitmaps, sounds etc.

6. No, because you did't tell us what error.

7. What is settriggerflag?


Always learn from history, to be sure you make the same mistakes again...

I suggest to make a mass-itteration-test to verify that all
memory gets cleaned up.

Just make an automatic loop wich loads one of 2 levels,
then populate the level further at runtime with several hundred random entities.
(use a pool of several differnt large models)

Let the entites (level and random ones) run some actions,
with bigger local arrays, pointers to other entities etc.

Then just wait a few frames and load another level.

Lets this loop run overnight and check how the memory footprint is.
If there are leaks they should show (unless its
soo small that noone cares anyhow)

if you use entity pointers for created entities like ENTITY* racing_car1 = ent_create(...); I think they should be removed by ptr_remove(), and set to = NULL; before you want to use in another level. Or remove it with an if statement for safety: if(racing_car1!=NULL) {ptr_remove(racing_car1); racing_car1 = NULL;} it can cause problems if you don't do it before using again.
actions are stopped automatically on entity remove, and you can stop your other functions having loops by proc_kill. and check their running by proc_status.

i did exactly you said and after 43 or 47 time i have an error :
can't create DirectX texture Map #161

i do it for some times and error message is not always "Map #161" but always "can't create DirectX texture"

i write a code to write some data in a file so this is data:
at fist:

after 47 times:

result:
nexus and d3d_texskins goes up and down that means code can get and release nexus memory
d3d_texfree almost always decrease and d3d_texbmaps almost always increase

it is interesting that when i comment below code, d3d_texbmaps is don't changed:
