I was running Windows 98, which is nice and outdated for almost everything. It ran fine, but as soon as I upgraded to Windows XP Pro, there was a 50% speed increase. However, for all Windows releases before XP, you need to download and install the free Microsoft Accessibility Kit. This is found either on the CD 3DGS came on (not your key disk), or on the download page.

Well, the build speed depends on the CPU your computer has, and so it is possible, that at your home pc the build was way faster then at your office or work-pc. Reinstalling wont help, just replacing the CPU maybe. Which CPU is installed at this pc? old_bill

It should be ok, maybe free a bit, but the most memory is taken from the RAM. Check with the taskmanager how much RAM is used and if it's more then the 512MB, the RAM will be expanded with space from your HDD; and this is definately slower.

That is not correct, as Windows 2000 is also NT based, you dont need it there. But even if you try it should give you an error during the installation. Besides that, Windows 2000 is fine to run 3DGS.

It says so here on the download page (see the top where the trial version is downloaded):

On old Windows versions prior to XP, the editors require Microsoft Accessibility 2.0.
Either this is a misprint, or you made a mistake.

I have run 3dGS on win2kpro since I purchased (starting with a6.11) it with no problems. I have made no other special efforts/additions to the operating system other than the windows updates and have not installed the accessibility kit.
3dGS updates have run fine in all product update versions. This machine with win2kpro is my primary development machine. I have another (AMD64) with winxp pro and have more problems with 3dGS on it.
As for the difference in compile times it might just be that win2k's virtual memory is not optimised, given that win2k can read above 512meg RAM. Try freeing up some HD space and check your virtual memory settings. Most times it is best to allow windows to manage itself, but this is not always the best scenerio.
Hope that helps.
