Hi I am a proffesional 2D game maker, and want to get into 3D gaming... but I just cannot find an easy fathomable way to design 3D characters, I would like to make a dream 3D fps game of mine with game studio...

What is the best way to get started to make my own 3D characters, I don't want them to be graphically mesmerising, I just want to make easy 3D characters which I can manipulate around...

I tried 3ds Max but it is to complex and proffesional, I want something simple such as scanning from photos perhaps...

Playstation 1 3D graphics was blocky but that would be enough for me to get a result like that.

What do yous recommend the steps I take to start myself of in creating 3D characters?

What I generally do is plot points (vertices) on the three grids and move them around building faces as neccessary. This doesn't include doing calculations and measurements. If you don't want the calculations and measurements, just plotting points and getting the basic size (given your map scale) is all you need. Choose your map size wisely (16:1 (16 quants to 1 foot) is common for FPS games, I use 8:1 for my 3D game and a screwy scale (but for a reason) for my 2D game about 75% done.

Teddy/Chameleon are pretty easy to use, but usually result in a fairly distinct style that tends to resemble stuffed animals.

I tend to work with Milkshape3D for simple 3D modeling, using what I think is called a block modeling approach (? - I'm more of a programmer than artist/modeler). Anyway, I throw down pretty crude boxes and other primatives, and then tweak/add verticies into shape. Probably not very feasible for sophisticated models, but it seems to work well with low-low poly stuff.

The original program was created in the 20th Century, however:

Quote:

Teddy requires Java installed in your machine, and mainly designed for Windows.

It works and it works well in XP. I'm playing with it right now. Make sure Java2 is on your system.

Create your characters in something like Milkshape then animate them using a program such as Character Shop http://charactershop.thegamecreators.com/ or purchase pre-build packages from http://darkmatter.thegamecreators.com/
