I highly recommend using Maya 6 or 6.5 instead of 7 at this point, since there aren't many plugins for it.
Here's my Maya->GS art path, using 6.5.
Download and install the ActorX plugin. This was designed for use in Unreal, but following this art path, it will work in GS. You will also need Right Hemisphere's Deep Exploration:
1. Install ActorX
2. In command line, type Axmesh for static meshes.
3. Export the selected model(s) using Axmesh. This generates a .ase file. It will keep your UV coordinates, if you do your UV in maya. I like to use the auto UV feature.
4. Using Deep Exploration, convert the .ase file into .3DS
5. Import the .3DS file into MED.
6. Import the skin image.
7. Save as .MDL and use in your Gamestudio project.
Optionally if you like to use Deep Paint 3D to paint the texture, add the following steps between 3-4.
3a. Use Deep Exploration to convert the .ase file to .obj.
3b. Import the .obj into Deep Paint 3D and paint as needed.
3c. Save the texture file you painted and use it as the skin image in step 6.
3d. (Proceed to step 4.)
Alternately, you can just use Ventilator's very useful 3DGS exporter, which is well suited for animated characters and models. I prefer the Axmesh path for actually working and painting on static meshes.
Best wishes, and I hope this is HELPFUL!
