hi,

i have some models in 3dsmax which i need to convert to 3dgs's mdl7 format.

i need the texture atlas to be created in max via the render-to-texture functiona and also some tweaking on the uv for transparency portions.

i'm using 6.4 hence the mdl format can support multiple skins and with transparency.

just export as 3ds from max with all textures and import into MED, then just save it as MDL7

Or download one of the free MAX2MDL plugins or purchase the MAX2MDL plugin (from the same guy that makes MAX2GS).

does the plugin take care of transparency or 2nd skin automatically?

I don't think so. I import the skins through MED anyway, especially for transparencies.

Certainly not managed to get the max plugs to handle multichannel textures, or texture blending. If your trying to do this, I would look into texture baking, or Render to Texture as its known in max.

my model in max has 2 texture references: 1 base texture and 1 alpha texture

but when i import it into med and create 2 skins, the transparent part of it still looks opaque

can someone show me the parameter settings for the second skin, say, if i want to use the alpha channel of the first texture instead of using 2 textures?

when i'm using med, why is the "specify alpha texture" option in "edit material" under "manage skins" always disabled?

i thought i could use it to simply specify my alpha texture instead of using a second skin for it.

under why circumstance can it be enabled and be used?

you dont need an extra image for opacity, just use 4th alpha channel on one (PS and GIMP does that)

just use a 32 bit tga file for the skin, with an alpha channel, or dds with explicit alpha
