What methods are there for hand-drawing textures. That I can think of, there is only the 500$ drawing pad that you hook up to your computer, or a scaner and paper? However, in my expierence, I dont get good quality when I scan my drawings. Is there any other way to hand draw textures?

Hiya.

I use my Wacom tablets (oldies but goodies; a 6"x8" and a 12"x12", both old serial ArtZ II's). I do 'scan' some stuff in, but usually end up using the scan as a sort of 'guideline', and re-draw it in the computer. For actual texturing asset creation, just use digital photos, and learn to use Photoshop/PaintShopPro/GIMP/Painter/Whatever to blend and mix pictures together.

I'm sure there are tutorials out there for doing all three (hand draw, scan, digital pics). Good luck!

The tools I use to hand-draw are as follows:

Paper
Pencil
Ruler
Graph paper (or some kind of object with a grid behind it that I can easily see)
A handful of art-related formulas (I calculate everything in order to draw)
Calculator
Scanner
Computer (for touch-ups)

My primary use of creating textures and images is through the computer.

I make all my textures by hand, with a painterly look.

I use a $150 wacom tablet, but you can get an inexpensive Aiptek tablet that is dirt cheap! 40 - 100 dollars, and they're just fine. I used to work for the company that makes Painter, and I switched between both tablets frequently-- aside from being a bit cheaper in construction, the Aiptek is reall good!

If you cannot get your hands on Painter, there is a free version of Deep Paint (not to confuse with Deep Paint 3D) or Gimpshop. Painter has a nice 'make pattern' feature, where the edges 'loop' around.. if you draw off the right side, it appears on the left, good for making seamless textures. Both painter and deep paint have really organic quality brush textures that are hard to get in photoshop/gimpshop.

good luck
