hi,

i have a model in 3dsmax which references a few texture. i did a render-to-texture so that the model reference only 1 texture for efficiency reasons in the game.

i'm able to obtain the single texture but when i export the model to 3ds and importing it into med, the uvs are wrong and the single texture does not map correctly on the model.

i noticed that once i hit the render-to-texture option in max, there's an automatic modifier on the model that unwraps the uv (flatten). but some how this is not effected in the exported model.

can any max guru out there help me? thanks!

Render to texture in max can be annoying as there are options to create shell material automatcially etc.....

In what ways are the UVS wrong in GS?
The best way I find in Max is to use UVW unrwap modifer and use one texture only....
Its really important not to overlap the UVWS as when you bake the textures it, it goes into a real mess------

Once youve baked, I usually find its ok in MED......

hi james,

can you point me any tutorial on rendering to texture in max with directions on how to handle the uvs and ensure that the uvs map correctly to the single texture map?

thanks!

hi gedimaster...

if you use a "baked" texture the texture have to be in diffuse-channel of the max-material editor...

if interested i will post (or link) a step by step tut...

Here is what i do.

I render to texture with the automatic uv flattener.

Then click the Automatic UV Flattening modifier in the stack.

Save the .uvw file.

Change the Map Channel to 1.

Create a bitmap material. Select the .bmp or .tga you created from render to texture. Make sure its map channel is 1.

If you have that footstep in between the feet of your character you must unfreeze all, apply a UVW Unwrap to it, then assign it the same material as your character.

MAKE SURE THE MODIFY TAB IS NOT SELECTED IN MAX.

Then export to .mdl.

That should work.

************* MY PROBLEM ******************
On one computer i can export the animation, i.e. a pop-up menu shows up and allows me to select the frames i wish to export. On my other computer i never get that pop-up even for the same model, so it exports only the first frame. I've had this problem for years and i know a few others do to. Does anyone know why this is?
