the crane script is really simple (just some physics entities connected by constraints). i don't think the book is worth it if you just are interested in the crane.

the only tricky thing was parameter tweaking to get a6's physics engine stable but if you use different models you would probably have to tweak everything quite differently anyway.

Yes, I am only interested in the cable of the crane, how is it made and how is the script for moving it? I have absolutely no idea how to do that. Can you give me an example?

Frits

I like to keep scripting simple, life is hard enough as it is.

i don't have it on my hd anymore but if i remember correctly first comes a ball joint, then a slider joint which gets used to control the length and then there are ten ball joints (created recursively) with about 1m fixed distance.

first i tried to use a slider inbetween each of the ten ball joints but it wasn't possible to get this stable. because i limited the range of the up/down movement quite a bit it's not really noticable that there only is one slider at the top.

I'm more interested in how you got it to look like a rope, is that a simple rectangle model inbetween each of the ball joints?

It could have be done with particles, if I remember correctly he had a pretty slick looking cable...

Cheers

Good point there, much like I used the particles for my lazers.

I remember the rope not giving a shadow either.
