I have a sprite, a wheat field to be used on a farm much like in Empire Earth. One is a .bmp and the other is a .tga. The .bmp shows up fine except that on the overlay a black outline shows up. The .tga won't show up at all.

How do I get the targa to show up? Or if that doesn't work, how do I get rid of this outline?

I have A5 Extra. Photoshop 6.0.1.

the outline is caused by using anti-alis on in your paint program when drawing your wheat field ( its in your drawing what LOOKS like black 0/0/0 realy isn;t)

your tga probably wasn;t saved right with alpha channel

I saved it as a 32 bit. The computer displays it as a .tga. I don't know what I would have done wrong.

jepp, it's surely an alpha channel issue. upload the file, i gonna set you up an alpha channel that should work. then have a look at it... it's hard to explain it here, just look at it then.

If I recall correctly from reading the Internet Archive, A5 Extra does support alpha channel, only 50% transparent. A5 Commercial and Pro do support transparency with full alpha.

Edit: Here is that link that proves it.

Edit #2: Now that I've read the chart - A5 Extra does support alpha channel. I recall earlier that it didn't....

wheat

I'm warning you, the transparent area is a very irregular shape.

@Uli, you sure Extra once did not support alpha? Back in the days of A5.10E perhaps? I had A5.10 and upgraded to, i think it was A5.51 as soon as it came out.

But then if it didn't once support transparency, then the image should have at least shown up right?

I gave the link to the Internet Archive that stores old, past versions of a website (even yours if you had one). The link had the details for 5.51, the last of the A5 days. You can search the internet archive for past versions further back (even A4).

didn;t even look at his engin verision 32 bit tga wasn't even supported untill 6.2... ish when the engine made the change to dx9 i believe

prior to that you had to use my.overlay to force a transparency channel into the rendering ( black rgb 0/0/0 to 8/8/8 i think it was)

as i thought, your alpha channel is plain black (fully transparent). i uploaded the corrected image here, see if it works.

EDIT: at least it works with v6...
