Just letting you know, I hired Vincent. And he is doing a excellent job so far! He is using 3D Game Studio. I found out that 3D game studio is very limiting in many ways. And with the price tag for the highest version you absolutely get no value for your money. It was ok if it was 150-200$. I saw that in certain conditions even shockwave runs/renders 3D at 40-50fps where 3DGS was doing 2!!! And to think that this is a professional game engine!!!!

i am not sure what is done and how it looks like but i am 100% confident that the type of game you need can be made very easy with gs and without any problems.

not what he had in his original requirements (i didn't read the reworked ones). a city full of cars with realistic physics and a multiplayer network mode and so on wouldn't be easy to do with 3dgs (it also wouldn't really be easy with most other engines ).

of course you can do a project like that (and maybe also for $1000 if someone already has some of the required code and most of the artwork - which is unlikely since his requirements are quite specific and there also aren't that many racing games done with 3dgs which still is more an indoor engine) but you have to be much more realistic than anam was in his original document. it sounded way too overambitious.

maybe you could post some screenshots once it is finished and tell us about the features that made it in. would be interesting!

Well since time was short I bought a very nice city model which fullfilled all my requirements. But unfortunately even with a 24,000 poly city 900$ 3dgs pro crawled at mere 4 FPS



where 150$ beyond virtual ran solid at 35fps (on vincent's machine, ran 40-50 on mine i think).



By the way, all this low fps with only city and car and nothing else (not traffic, no jewels, no extra stuff)

i am not sure how the level was created but from what i see this is way below what 3dgs can. either there is some code issue or the level is made out of level blocks and without lod.

gs is a bsp engine and outdoor levels need to be treated very special or they wont work.

as a side note i must say that i am disapointed about how the level looks like.
all the fuzz for a plane ground with very bad textured houses?!


this old level i made runs without much optimizations and with some old techniques i used with about 70fps:


a level i am working on right now uses 4 times the quality, more optimizations and consequent lod systems and runs with solid 50 fps.

so i am not sure where your cpu power has gone.
there must be an issue with the level

Only 4fps with a 25k poly modell? You must doing something wrong. May i ask you what your system specifikations are? Maybe youre using a laptop with no real 3d graphic card?

That's really strange, you ask for high requirements, lot of polys ,etc ...
and incredible you choose 3DGS Pro ???

BSP is slow compared to models, and it's an outdated technique.

why not choosing Torque engine , in combination with LOD you could have something a lot better and with top notch network power if you need network.

If some company would say to me to make a game like you target,
i would before try to find the right powerfull engine, and some dedicaced artists kwnowing well urban,circuit,cars environment on CG forums.

Not to talk too bad, but with a city like in your first picture, it can only be an internal project
not lot of people would play it with that simple copy and paste of bad textures.
