Hmmmmm donuts...

Create a mic device DLL plugin, research the web/scientific library of the university of your choice for speech analysis algorithms or simple voice pattern comparison and voilá! you have it! Or search for a open source library....

The big chocolate donut made me silly...

i think microsoft has a speech recognition api you can use for free. (you could ask a. russel! he seems to work with it at the moment.) i don't think you will get something better anywhere else.

Yes, the Microsoft one is free to use. Look for SAPI, the last SDK I worked with was 5.1.

This is not an easy task. and there are various issues with using it. For example, it is quite processor intensive and you need a way to set it up on the users computer with microphone wizards and whatnot.

Be prepared for a serious effort.

or just get a plug-in device/ 3rd party application that allows you define voice input to replace/simulate other inputs ( keyboard, mouse, joystick buttons etc)

you can usualy find them around $30 or less, one I have allows programming multiple sets of voice commands switchable between sets by button press as well as multiple groups voice chats

in fact I think the dll(s) your using Russel was probably developed for the gamevoice originaly.

Depending on your budget and targets, Philips offers a really nice
speech-recognition system, which is mostly used in professional environments:

Game Voice looks interesting, but requires hardware to use it.

I used Microsoft SAPI 5.1. It isn't too bad. The best thing is that anyone can download it for free.

I am currently working with Fonix. They have a very nice, light and fast system. They even have an SDK especially for games that offers wickedly fast and accurate recognition without a big hit on the CPU, and works well in noisy environments to boot. This isn't an off the shelf product, though. You'll need to contact them if you are interested in using it.
