I would like to copy as as an instance so if I make a hundred plant model / block groups, and I change one, the other 99 would update. Instanced lights? Ability to affect flags, settings, skills across multiple objects?

Is this possible now?

Please add geometry instancing.

Because Shader 3 supports geometry instancing, plus now people will be buying Vista and updating their graphic card to Shader 4.

in fact instancing can be done with shader 2.0 as well; its called shader instancing.

Hardware instancing is definitely interesting.

I was talking more about groups and lights - I would find it very useful, to say lay down a group of blue floor lights, all instances of one another, and adjust all by changing one.

I rely on this a lot in Max and other 3D all of the time for laying out lights, and models.

Or decide, I want to use a different wall lamp, change one in wed, and they all change - that kind of thing.

Honestly, it surprises me quite a bit that Conitec has not implemented any apparent form of instancing... it would make a huge difference on performance.

I can tell you right now the reason: it requires shaders. I think Conitec has said they dont intend to implement shader-only features for a while.

There are not that many people yet who have a Geforce 8800, which is as far as I know the only graphics card currently available with shader model 4.0. Sure, the Geforce 8800's sell very good at the moment, but looking at all gamers/ pc users, it's a very very small amount of people. Infact, not much people have multi-core processors or current high-end 3D cards... It's good to implement these more high-end features, but if only 1 or 2% of every customer can take advantage of it ...

Cheers
