I think this book aims more for 'starters who haven't touched 3dgamestudio just yet' than newbies who already have sóme knowledge like yourself Dusty3D. It's a guide, perhaps it's quite reasonable to expect a lot of theory. Programming examples have the disadvantage of becoming 'old syntax' the moment certain important functions or commands slightly change, so in that respect I understand why there's not lot's and lot's of code examples. Anyways, like I said, this is probably simply not aimed at newbies, but rather at total starters,
