if you want to see an engine preview you have to save it as an mdl fil first

ok... a plain material is not enough, u also have to put a texture in this material (material editor-->maps-->diffuse color-->bitmap). use bmp,pcx,tga or dds-format and use a texture resolution like 256*256, 512*512, 1024*1024 etc...
