what do u use, how is your workflow , how does it integrate and so on...
i am totally unsure atm..

my premier purpose is to export lowpoy from cinema4d , create some high detail information and get it back onto the lowpoly version

thanks in advance and have a nice long weekend:)

you could also try blender. sculpting in blender is easy even if you don't really know how to use the rest of blender. i think zbrush and mudbox support more extreme polygon counts but sculpting one million polygons in blender is fun too.

the next modo version which will be released this summer will support sculpting too. i am not sure but i think zbrush, mudbox and modo are in similar price ranges and modo does a lot more than sculpting. how modo sculpting will compare to zbrush and mudbox will have to be seen but it looks promising in the preview videos.

I'm using zbrush and all i can say is this: pure fun!
I use Cinema 4D to create a low polygon model, unwrap it and then import it into zbrush. I then create a high poly model (damn this is so much fun!), let zbrush do the normal-/heightmaps (1 click and you're set), export it as obj and have fun

However when exporting models from c4d, make sure there are:
1. no ngons!
2. no triangulated polygons!
3. everything has to consist of polygons built out of 4 vertexes (does this word even exist )

I also tried mudbox some time ago. I fiddled around with it for like 30 minutes and then uninstalled it. Maybe zbrush really is easier, faster, prettier ... maybe i'm just used to zbrush
I'd say try both (there are trial versions of both zbrush and mudbox if i remember correct) and judge for yourself.

All i can say is that i never had any problems in using zbrush with 3dgs/tgea/lawmaker

I am a ZBrush user and I can say that ZBrush delivers way more than only sculpting. You can also paint in 3d, you can paint alpha textures to create 3d-geometry, you can transfer geometry from one mesh to another, you can model in different stages of subdivision and can switch the stages everytime, you can even paint tilable textures and much much more.

And it is very fast. I can create a basic head from a simple sphere in only a couple of minutes. Modelling never was so fast.

But ZBrush has his own logic and interface. I found it not very easy to learn it. Nevertheless it is an amazing software since it can do what other tools can't.

i have checked the prices:

zbrush 450€
mudbox $650 (~480€)
modo $900 (~670€) but sometimes they have special deals where if you preorder or own other 3d software you can get it for $700 (~520€)

thanks for your comments so far!
i'll check blender again, does it work fine to export the highpoly normalmaps for the lowpoly base mesh?

however i am somewhat tending to zbrush as i know the demo back from version 2 and the prize is acceptable there, too. plus that i never found my way into blender
