i can't help but notice how much the characters look like jhonen vasquez's work, mosts notably JTHM and devi.

True, it does seem to have had a big Mr. Scolex influence, still although it does look a bit too much like them, it's also simply making use of the established stereotype characters... I've got quite a few books about drawing and those have very similar characters in them as well...
