I'd like to surround my terrain with a barbed wire fence. I am not quite sure the best way to accomplish this. For one thing, the terrain is not flat, so the solution would need to flow with the terrain. Does anyone here have any ideas? Would it make sense to have modeled fence posts and some sort of barbed-wire sprite stretched in between each postt? Is that the most efficient way?

Thanks.

Sure, that will work but keep LOD in mind too.
Dont know if LOD supports image files (never tried it) but if not, creatng a 2 sided model plane with the barbed wire texture will get around that prob.(another tip: one sided will work better if you can script it to show only the textured side when you need to see the fenceline.)

A tip on getting contour flow is to use your terrain as the foundation for the flow, e.g. convert the terrain to model (not necessary) then mark out in skin mode, the boundary line, delete all non relevent parts and save as fence flow.mdl (or whatever) so that you can use it to build your fence line on top of it.

Segments can be created and saved with 'save as' so that you can ent_create them when you need to.

Hope this helps,

Cheers.

This concept/technique is new to me. Do you mean chisel away at the model until I have only the fence line, then save it as a separate model?

"Segments" as in "sections of fence" ? Is this for displaying as needed according to the LOD I want?

Q.1 Yes and from it, build the fence model itself, this way you have the shape of the contours preset.
Q.2 Sections of fence saved as they are actually positioned so that you can ent_create them and they will magically appear in place.

From these sections you create further lod sections,i.e. Lod 2 can be just a model plane with the fence posts just painted on.
